A naturalist, by definition, is a person who specializes in natural history, especially in the study of plants and animals in their surrounding environment. Maintaining a field journal of notations, weather, and thoughts, or keeping a notebook of pressed leaves and specimens goes hand and hand with accurately recording outdoor observations.
Although many books have been written for nature-lovers, birders, and biology students about keeping a field journal, it is rather simple....just record whatever is of interest to you along with the date and time of the observation. This is especially helpful when returning to locations to forage herbs and wild roots, or following the sighting of particular bird in different seasons.
Along with keeping a field journal for observations and an old book for pressing leaves, I use a small curio cabinet to display my special nature finds.
I hope this inspires you to elegantly document a few of your own nature observations this season.
