Premium holiday greens are available right in your backyard. Gathering greenery is an easy and fun activity for the whole family. Pine, cedar, boxwood, and holly are traditional evergreens in home landscapes. A few stems cut here and there can brighten up a dull room in numerous ways for the holidays. Listed below are some of my tried and true methods for gathering greens.
Use clean, sharp pruners to cut woody stems.
Clip boxwood before frost and before the leaves turn dark from cold weather. Place immediately in water until ready to use. Boxwood will stay fresh for many weeks in water.
Clip pine after the first cold frost when the sap is frozen. Stand branches upright (without water) until ready to use. If cut before frost, put branches in buckets of water until ready to use.
Clip holly only as you need it and put directly into water. Holly does not stay perky fresh as long as other evergreens.
Keep greenery away from heat and direct sunlight.
Fresh wreaths, centerpieces, and garlands bring the scent and beauty of nature to your home for the holidays. The sky's the limit when it comes to decorating with evergreen boughs, boxwood greenery, cones, holly and winterberry.
