A fence makes for good neighbors mainly because it establishes a permanent boundary line. No matter the style, a fence serves to keep something in or shut something out.  As this poem by Markham suggests, a boundary can either divide or make us feel united, loved and safe.

He drew a circle that shut me out—
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!"

- Edwin Markham
